The AP investigation also found that while the DOD says it considers racism and extremism within the military to be a "security concern," it does not have funding that specifically supports efforts to address extremism. The military describes active participation as "publicly demonstrating or rallying, fundraising, recruiting and training members," as well as organizing or leading organizations.Įxperts interviewed by the AP say there's also ongoing concern over the military commander's ability to enact a wide range of administrative and disciplinary actions - including administrative separation or appropriate criminal action - against military personnel who engage in prohibited activities.Ĭommanders essentially have total discretion to determine how to address situations as they arise, which experts say has created non-uniform, scattershot enforcement, with some commanders establishing a no-tolerance approach and others employing weak enforcement of the rules. The regulations, like the previous ones, only prohibit "active participation," in such groups, a murky policy that civil rights organizations have raised concerns about for years. The new Pentagon rules do not outright ban service members from being members of extremist organizations, such as the Ku Klux Klan, Oath Keepers, or other right-wing and white nationalist groups. The new National Defense Authorization Act signed into law by President Biden on Monday directs the Secretary of Defense to make a recommendation to Congress within 180 days if a new statute is needed to address violent extremism, but does not address hate crimes or racial disparities in military law. "For example, an assault on a person, regardless of the reason for the assault, would still be categorized as an assault…regardless of what motivated the crime." "While it's possible hate crimes have occurred, our investigations are not titled as such," the NCIS said in an email. The DOD also updated its screening of recruits and is looking at how to prepare troops who are retiring from being targeted by extremist organizations.Īs a result, investigative agencies such as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service or Army Criminal Investigative Division also don't have a specific hate crime category, which impacts how they investigate cases. Last week, in response to the order the military issued new rules to deal with extremism that included social media usage policy updates where liking and reposting white nationalist and extremist content could result in disciplinary action. Capitol in a melee that sent lawmakers scrambling for safety, left one person fatally shot by Capitol Police and caused millions of dollars in damages to the building largely seen as the symbol of American democracy.Īustin's order, which also came as America as a whole was grappling with how to address systemic racism, was the latest in a series of decades-long efforts by the military to purge its ranks of extremists and white supremacists. The stand-down came in response to the participation and the subsequent arrests of several veterans and at least one active duty service member, who along with thousands of supporters of former President Donald Trump on January 6, stormed the U.S. In February, with the images of the violent insurrection in Washington still fresh in the minds of Americans, newly confirmed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin took the unprecedented step of signing a memo directing commanding officers across the military to institute a one-day stand-down to address extremism within the nation's armed forces. When talking about projection in films we often compare the projector models, projection methods, and so on and so forth. But it’s hard to really compare the projection of the two formats since they’re so different. It’s safe to say that projecting three simultaneous images is a lot more convoluted than projecting one. However because the three screens provide separate imagery that add detail and information for the movie, there’s an extra layer of immersion, allowing you to feel like you’re part of the action yourself. ScreenX uses three separate screens using the standard widescreen ratio. This ultra-wide aspect ratio allows viewers to see more image than the standard widescreen and while 0.1 more image may not seem like a lot on the surface, remember that these screens are 45–50 feet wide on average, and IMAX screens are general 72 feet long, that extra 0.1 is quite meaningful at such a large scale. This means that the image is almost twice as long as it is tall compared to the usual widescreen’s 16:9 (1.8:1). True IMAX theaters use a special aspect ratio of 1.9:1. However, it remains a popular alternative to IMAX among a dedicated crowd of fans. This vicious cycle has, no doubt, hampered ScreenX’s ability to grow and introduce its platform to new locations. While IMAX theaters would still be able to show movies made with ScreenX counterpart footage (without the extra footage), the extra work and money invested for such a limited audience means that the extra time and money invested in the extra footage was essentially for nothing. This extra factor combined with the limited availability of ScreenX theaters has been a decisive roadblock for the format. This requires that the production team essentially shoot and create three separate movies that can all cohesively be seen as one movie. ScreenX showings require extra work to be done at the pre-production level to provide the imagery for the second and third screens. IMAX theaters are able to show movies that aren’t specifically shot using IMAX compatible cameras. There’s also the factor of the information for the side screens. As a result, in the ten years that ScreenX has been in operation, they’ve only managed to introduce their service to around 34 countries. ScreenX theaters need to be built specially to include the technology required to run the show in the first place. One of the primary differences between ScreenX and IMAX is availability. They use different projection methods, screens, and require different levels of pre- and post-productive integration to achieve the maximum benefit from the showing. On the axis of objective metrics, ScreenX and IMAX differ wildly as their ultimate visions and goals are very different. On the subjective axis, ScreenX and IMAX essentially boil down to “choose whichever you liked best” rather than any comparable subjective metrics. However, ScreenX and IMAX are so different there’s no real point in comparing their subjective metrics. When comparing experiences, usually we look at objective metrics first and subjective metrics second. How Do ScreenX and IMAX Work? The Objective Metrics Still, the experiences are so different in practice that there’s no reason to limit ourselves by attempting to compare them on more than objective metrics. In this way, it’s something of a lateral version of the IMAX idea which intends to capture more vertical image than is traditionally possible. The two side screens, tilted to a 270 degree angle simulate the experience of peripheral vision and allow you to see “off screen” effects like explosions that you would not normally see in a traditional movie. The middle screen in a ScreenX theater is most similar to the traditional movie-watching experience and features the movie itself. ScreenX features three screens that each play different films. The experience ScreenX intends to bring is the most immersive visual experience possible, featuring three panoramic screens that allow you to see the main picture and additional footage on the sides to add more detail to the complete picture. IMAX is an innovation and improvement on the traditional movie-watching experience while ScreenX is a complete re-imagining of the experience. The biggest difference between ScreenX and IMAX is the format. It’s similar to IMAX in that it aims to capture more of the image than a traditional movie, but they’re not comparable in any other way. ScreenX is a relatively new addition to the movie-going experience that aims to allow people to feel as though they’re on set with the actors. The world is changing at light speed and innovation is happening faster than most people can keep up with it, even in the entertainment industry.Ī lot of people wonder if there’s a connection between all of these new movie-going “experiences” and what makes them worth the obvious price hike. He is noble with a sense of honour but he lacks personality and you feel like he is stepping aside so Bruce and Thomas Jane can steal the limelight. Our lead Noah is played by Cody Kearsley and he is sympathetic enough as he sneaks on to the ship to be with his pregnant girlfriend Hayley (Kassandra Clementi). It also has a decent supporting cast including Thomas Jane who gets to kick some alien ass (even if he is a little underused) Johnny Messner, Rachel Nichols, Callan Mulvey and Ralf Moeller. You know exactly what to expect and it delivers in terms of B movie thrills. He spouts a few one-liners while brandishing a flamethrower as a horde of alien parasites try to kill him and a few random survivors on their spaceship headed towards New Earth.īreach may not be anything new and is yet another entry in a long line of Alien knock offs, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a blast. I’m pleased to say that for once Breach (or Anti-Life as it was initially called) is the exception with Bruce being one of the main characters and actually displaying some personality, reminding us of classic Bruno… nearly. Review: These days if we see Bruce Willis in a trailer to a movie, we can be sure that it will likely be nothing more than an extended cameo and for the most part he is going to fax in his performance looking bored. Plot: Fleeing a devastating plague on Earth, an interstellar ark comes under attack from a new threat - a shape-shifting alien force intent on slaughtering what’s left of humanity. Bruce spouts one-liners while brandishing a flamethrower and Thomas Jane chews the scenery too so there are worse ways to spend an evening. Breach was far better than I was expecting and may be the best Bruce Willis film in years but admittedly that is faint praise as most of his recent fare is unwatchable. Meanwhile, no story of the Samurai sword is complete without mentioning the name Masamune (aka Goro Nyudo), who established the Soshu tradition of sword making, introducing the hamon temper line. Katana, by the way, basically means any type of curved sword, and refers to both the class of sword and the construction of the curved steel. At long last, the katana sword was officially born. With the increased demand for a defense-based military, there came a peripheral increase in Japanese sword making. Over the centuries that followed (dubbed the Kamakura and Muromachi periods respectively), Japan would find itself fending off barbaric Mongolian invaders over and over again. That warrior went by the name Samurai (aka bushi, aka buke). As clans waged battle against one another, and Shoguns seized power, a specific type of noble warrior emerged. Anyhow, Japan itself was undergoing radical changes in the 10th and 11th centuries, and carving out a society that had little to do with Chinese influence. Then a craftsman named Amakuni (supposedly) introduced a single-edged, slightly curved blade type, which was virtually unbreakable compared to what came before it…at least that’s what my ancestors say, and who am I (or you) to question them?īy the end of the 10th century, the majority of Japanese swords were curved from tang to tip, putting them in a class of their own. the part of the blade that extends into the handle). At first, Chinese swords and Japanese swords were essentially the same, but around 700AD, Japanese swords began to take on distinct features like a curved tang (i.e. Directly inspired by Chinese Jian swords, Chokuto swords originally featured a straight, double-edged iron blade. What Does Your Knife Say About Your Personality? History of the Samurai SwordĪccording to legend, the earliest Japanese swords were called Chokuto, and they first appeared over 1700 years ago. But yes, many of us want to invest space in a classic menubar, and the reasons are above.Add shortcut to template in Ribbon by creating quick steps Of course, I respect that other users may not find it useful, and I'm OK with it being optional as it was in Opera 12.x. This alone is a reason why, for me, the classic menu bar is worth much more than the space it supposedly "wastes". This means that (1) you don't have to learn how to perform these standard functions in each program because they can be performed in the same way in every program, and (2) if you use several programs during a session (as most of us do), you don't have to think "now where was the print option in this particular program?" They all have a standard interface so printing something is pretty much unconscious, and therefore immediate. For example, "Print" is always under "File", "Find" is always under "Edit", and "Zoom" is always under "View", and there is always a "Help" menu which is the last one to the right - this happens not only in Opera 12.x with the menu bar enabled, but in every application that uses menu bars and has those functions. Classic menu bars have common standards that apply across all programs. Stephens doesn’t think he’ll be on but who knows. There’s a good chance you will be able to see Young and his catch on one of The Real Fishing Show airings in 2016. “They were giving me a hard time the last day because I didn’t want to go to shore for lunch. “I was the virgin fisherman,” says Stephens. Stephens says he had the biggest Walleye with his 21.5-inch catch but his brother-in-law caught one bigger with about two hours to go on their last day of fishing. Young took the honours for his 26-inch Walleye and the other Toro dealership winner caught the largest Pike at 42 inches. Before they started their three days of fishing, a $20 wager was placed among the 14 men on the trip with the pot being split for the one who caught the biggest Walleye and biggest Pike. Turns out Young also brought home some money. Bob spent 310 days on the road alone last year.īoth men enjoyed their time with the Izumis who they say are humble people and a lot of fun to be with.Īlthough Young exclaims that the whole thing was “surreal”. They own several Tim Hortons franchises, involved in agricultural businesses, invested in Elliot Lake condominiums and operate their fishing enterprises. They are also extremely successful businessmen. Wayne and Bob Izumi are more than just fishermen. He could put the line exactly where he wanted it. Almost everyday they each caught about 20 Pike and Walleye, although Bob Izumi caught about a 5-to-1 ratio to them. Young thought, “what am I in for” after catching that fish. In their first 30 minutes on the river, Young hooked onto a 40-inch Northern Pike. They ate the food provided by an executive chef, fished with the best gear, had a guide, and enjoyed the experience of fishing with Bob and Wayne Izumi. Stephens and Young were given the special treatment. The lodge itself is an elegant century-old building that for most of its life served as a private and corporate retreat for the Timothy Eaton family. Two kilometres away, on an island in the Winnipeg River they reached their destination, Reid’s Birch Island Resort. “It’s one thing to go to a fishing lodge but another thing to be there with Izumi,” says Young.Ī few weeks ago, the two men were met at Pearson International Airport by Wayne Izumi and flew to Winnipeg before being bussed 150 km east to the northwestern Ontario village of Minaki. He knew Young liked to fish and hunt and thought he was a good choice to go along. Stephens is not a fisherman but he knows a good deal when he sees one. The one condition to receive the prize was that the dealer principle had to go on the trip with the option of inviting a guest. Initially when Stephens received the call to learn he won the prize he “thought it was one of those win-a-cruise phone calls.” The Toro contact had to send him an e-mail and phone a second time before he realized he’d won. Young received the invite from his brother-in-law Ed Stephens, who won the fishing trip from Toro his Highland Fuels company acts as a Toro dealership among other things. That’s what local outdoorsman and successful businessman Tim Young told his father when he learned that he was invited on a fishing trip with Bob Izumi of The Real Fishing Show. If you don’t have the budget for freeze-dried meals, go to your local grocery store and buy food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Thankfully, there is an enormous variety of freeze-dried meals of such high quality that they rival some people’s own home cooking. But after spending years of having only MREs to eat, I can’t stand the thought of eating another one. I thought it was so cool to eat just like a real warrior. What Food to Packīack when I was a young kid, I loved eating MREs. The short trips will help you hone in what you need and will help you decide what you need more of for long durations. If you are going for longer than a week you absolutely must have a couple of short duration trips under your belt. Use the essentials gear list and supplement with the items you need more of. Packing for long duration trips are pretty straightforward. Backpacking trips over a week usually involve creating and following an itinerary so you cover certain distances each day so, by the time you run out of food, you will be at or close to your resupply point. The key takeaway is that you need to account for unexpected delays when planning your trip.įor short hikes of a day or two, you only need to pack extra food and be sure you locate a water source near your campsite. You may sprain your ankle, get pinned down by inclement weather, go off course, or decide to take a “zero” day (where you just chill all day), etc. While you should always have a set day that you expect to return, things don’t always go to plan. In order to be most prepared, we must take into account the following conditions before we begin gathering our gear: Trip duration, food, water, and weather. Even when you take the same gear along the same route, there are always variations you simply can’t plan for. Here Are Some Basic Considerations for Your Checklist Water shoes (for fording streams and camp wear).Roll of Duct Tape (wrap some around a pencil).Handheld GPS units (always take more than one as well as a map and compass). When backpacking trip duration exceeds a couple of days, some of these items become necessary. These items aren’t necessary for short backpacking trips but can greatly enhance your enjoyment. Camp stove (essential when dealing with cold).2-4 pair cold weather socks (thick wool or synthetic).1 mid layer jacket (use a waterproof shell in the essentials list as the third layer).Sleeping bag (with proper temperature rating). Most cold gear can be added to the essentials list, but there are some considerations you must make on some of the larger pieces of gear when going from mild conditions to cold. Whistle (Call for help with 3 short blows).Bear spray (Works equally well on crazy people as it does bears).Extra batteries (for anything that uses them).Nylon cord and carabiner (at least 50 feet).Money and ID (cash, credit card, and government issued ID card).Entrenching tool (for burying bodily waste).Topographical map, waterproof sleeve, and compass (Even if you know the trail).Meals and snacks (read the section about food for best practices and food hacks). 1 pair of running shorts (for camp wear/sleeping).
Luckily the Picasa desktop software has a feature "Delete empty online web albums" that fixed this for me. (remember the only way to delete an unwanted album is one at a time). What a nightmare! First Gladinet ended up creating hundreds of empty web albums with long binary titles during it's synchronization process with my Picasa web account. I tried out Gladinet Cloud Desktop (see my review on SiteJabber) which offers this very service. When a hundred or more albums get duplicated this can take hours!īecause of the synchronization issue I ran into under problem #1 I began looking for an alternative way to keep my local directories in sync with my Picasa web albums. The major issue with this falls in the fact that there is no multiple album deletion capability so in order to fix this you literally have to log into your web account and delete the duplicate albums one at a time. When synchronizing my web album with their Picasa desktop application I often find web albums duplicated. If you are not as rigid in this desire I highly recommend that you give the Picasa development team more time because some of the glitches and pains I have had to work through with regard to this service have been ongoing and very time consuming to put it mildly. I ended up adopting it as my primary photo hosting solution out of the shear desire to keep as much of my digital life under one proverbial roof. When Google's Picasa came out as is with most of their products I had to check it out and see what it was all about. I am an avid Googler and an individual who has always been fascinated with Google's business model and product development. |
